Passionn\u00e9 par les fonds marins, il fonde l\u2019Institut Oc\u00e9anographique de Monaco en 1889 avec le Mus\u00e9e tel qu\u2019on le conna\u00eet aujourd\u2019hui avec aquariums et pi\u00e8ces de collections ramen\u00e9s de ces diverses explorations.<\/p><p>En 1906, apr\u00e8s des ann\u00e9es de recherches et d\u2019exp\u00e9ditions oc\u00e9anographiques, il cr\u00e9e la Fondation Albert Ier, connue sous le nom d\u2019Institut Oc\u00e9anographique \u00e0 Paris, reconnue d\u2019utilit\u00e9 publique, afin que son \u0153uvre scientifique soit poursuivie et fait don du Mus\u00e9e Oc\u00e9anographique de Monaco \u00e0 sa fondation. Il devient membre de la Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de g\u00e9ographie et de la British Academy en 1909 dont il est d\u00e9cor\u00e9 de la m\u00e9daille d\u2019or pour ses nombreuses contributions scientifiques. En 1910, il cr\u00e9e une seconde Fondation Albert Ier, \u00e0 Paris.<\/p><p><strong>Le Prix Albert Ier de Monaco, f\u00fbt cr\u00e9\u00e9 en 1921, sous la d\u00e9cision de l\u2019Acad\u00e9mie Nationale de M\u00e9decine. Ce prix est destin\u00e9 \u00e0 r\u00e9compenser un travail qui a pu faire avancer le diagnostic ou bien le traitement de cancers.
